Stanton Carlisle, a small-time carnival operator, obtains the secrets of a fake mind reader and sets himself up as a spiritualist exploiting wealthy clients. When his scam is exposed he is ruined and is forced to return to the carnival as a "geek" who eats live chickens to earn his living.
