Research was designed to validate a screening process using teacher, peer, and self-ratings which had been developed for early identification of emotionally handicapped pupils who are vulnerable to learning and behavior problems in school. Results indicated that the collection of data within the school setting (rating of behavior by teachers, peers and pupils as well as estimates of intelligence and socioeconomic status) can be meaningfully and usefully combined to screen a group of pupils who would later be diagnosed by clinicians as having from moderate to extreme degrees of emotional handicaps manifest in school adjustment difficulties.
