520 | |a A study analyzed the effects of instruction in an introduction to public relations class on student perceptions of contrasting public relations communication styles. Two standard models, the traditional scales of family communication patterns and J. E. Grunig's triangular model of public relations objectives, were adapted for the study. A content analysis of several general public relations textbooks was undertaken to help shape six pertinent hypotheses to be tested, using a questionnaire given to students in two introductory public relations classes at a state university. There was a total of 309 students who completed the questionnaire during the first week of class and 186 who completed the same questionnaire during the last week of class. The first part of the questionnaire was designed to explore any differences between the perceived communication patterns of chief executive officers, public relations practitioners serving as advisers to chief executive officers, public relations practitioners dealing directly with diverse publics, and newspaper editors. The second part of the questionnaire dealt with different goals given priority by public relations practitioners. Results indicated that at the end of the semester students viewed chief executives as having more open communication patterns than the students had originally perceived and that they recognized that public relations advisers, rather than serving as unrestrained ombudsmen, must deal with greater communication patterns restraints than the students perceived at the beginning of the semester. (Four figures and 6 tables of data are included; 19 references and the survey instruments are attached.) (RS) | ||
