Summary: | A practicum addressed the problem of a lack of career education in a psychoeducational school, a lack that resulted in reduced student motivation, performance, and planning for the future. Following a literature review, suggestions were made for adjustments of instructional materials for emotionally handicapped students. A career education program was begun for the 12 middle school students to demonstrate that education is directly correlated with their future plans in the work world. The program included field trips, speakers, and materials related to career awareness. The materials included films, filmstrips, books, articles, workbooks, cassettes, and pamphlets. The results of the practicum were positive. This conclusion was based not only on results of objective instruments but also on the subjective opinions of those involved. The students became aware that learning is not only important but is crucial to meeting career goals. At the same time, they found that learning can be an enjoyable experience. (The report describes the career plan used and suggests ways it can be implemented by other programs. A checklist and questionnaires used in the project and a four page listing of printed and audiovisuals materials are appended.) (KC) |
