Effects of acid mine drainage on nesting tree swallows [electronic resource]

Streams contaminated by acid mine drainages (AMD) cause biological and ecological stresses via (1) low pH values; (2) high concentrations of dissolved trace metals; (3) deposition of metal oxides. These stresses are often propagated throughout the food chain. In order to understand the effects of AM...

These stresses are often propagated throughout the food chain. In order to understand the effects of AMD on nesting tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), nest boxes were erected at nine sites along the Snake River (near Keystone, CO) and its tributaries (Deer Creek and St. John's Creek) in May 2003. Tree swallows are useful indicators of local contamination for several reasons: (1) They readily use nest boxes so next boxes can be erected at sites of interest; (2) They feed primarily on emergent aquatic insects; and (3) They feed within 400m of their nest boxes.
