Using participatory mixed methods to implement an acceptability and feasibility study of urine HPV DNA testing for cervical cancer screening in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia / Angela Sy, Martina L.E. Reichhardt.
Non-invasive, self-collected sampling methods for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA detection in women, which are reliable, efficient, and acceptable, can potentially address barriers to cervical cancer screening in underserved communities, including low- and middle-income countries like the island nat...

A community-based participatory, mixed methods, randomized control pilot research project evaluated use of urine HPV testing as a culturally and human resource appropriate method of cervical cancer screening in Yap State, FSM. A secondary objective of this pilot project, discussed in this case study, was to examine the community-based participatory research mixed methods used. How the participatory methods contributed to study completion and fidelity, and how the methods informed results on the feasibility and preference of HPV screening tests will be explained. Data collection involved a self- or staff-administered survey, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews from women and stakeholders. Survey questions included demographic and social characteristics, prior cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccine history, and acceptability issues--including preference of urine collection. Key informant interviews and focus group discussions conducted at the end of the study provided descriptive qualitative data about the method of cervical cancer screening, feedback on the project, and issues affecting project sustainability. Research project procedures were acceptable and feasible to professionals and community stakeholders. This research project operationalized community-based participatory research according to existing frameworks and resulted in timely completion of this first ever randomized control trial in FSM. | |
