Summary: | From the 19th-century comparisons of ancient Mexican art with that of Asia Minor and Egypt, to its similarities with the primitive arts that are a source of inspiration for modern artists, to the lively attraction that surrealists and other traveling writers felt for the aesthetics of eternal Mexico, this collection of texts that were born, for the most part, the adventures of its authors through Mexico or their images are presented as a journey through antiquity reinvented. These nine texts by outstanding authors in the field of literature and the arts have been little disseminated among Mexican audiences. The selection aims to show a broad historical panorama of the European vision, especially French, about ancient Mexico, its arts and its rediscovery in the early nineteenth century. This journey through aesthetic wonder will help the reader to situate the ancient art of Mexico in the concert of the visual arts. On the other hand, the great literary quality of the texts and their amenity -product of the trip and direct experience-, as well as the diversity of the pens and the passion that marks each of the authors, are many other reasons to make their reading an original and maddening experience. |
