Opposition candidacy ambition emerges as a consequence of experiences with civic activism while ruling party candidacy grows from "career partisanship" cultivated through years of party service. The book shows existing explanations of candidacy decisions derived from advanced democracies can be adapted to electoral authoritarian contexts, but that the strategic candidacy framework those accounts rely on is make when running for office are ultimately driven by candidates' political and vocational career histories. Weghorst conducts an in-depth investigation of Tanzania featuring original survey data, sequence analysis, archival research, and qualitative interviews and combines this with analysis of legislators from 17 authoritarian and democratic regimes in sub-Saharan Africa.
