LMFBR leak detection systems for primary piping [electronic resource] : a preliminary evaluation.

A survey of sodium to gas leaks made several years ago showed the inadequacy of the then-used leak detection systems to detect large sodium leaks. In the cases analyzed, leak detection monitors detected only 19% of the leaks, instrumentation other than leak detectors accounted for 4%, and visual obs...

In the cases analyzed, leak detection monitors detected only 19% of the leaks, instrumentation other than leak detectors accounted for 4%, and visual observation accounted for 46%. Recent developments, primarily of aerosol type leak detections, have improved this situation substantially, but long-term performance data are not yet available for low leak rates. This preliminary evaluation reviews the types of leak detection systems proposed for CRBR and the available information on their performance and on the external corrosion of piping by sodium leaking into the N₂--O₂ blanketed atmosphere proposed for CRBR.
