Description
Summary:Oldknow Junior is one of the largest junior schools in the country with a five-form entry and over five hundred pupils on roll. This programme follows two NQTs embarking upon their first term of work. Simrit Riat and Vicky Rutherford met as trainee teachers and now begin their teaching careers as colleagues and friends teaching Year 3. We'll see how they are able to support each other and show how the school supports them. Oldknow Junior is a challenging inner-city school recently emerged from special measures. Most of the pupils are from a Pakistani or Bangladeshi background and almost all speak English as an additional language. Headteacher Bhupinder Kondal talks about the challenges that lie ahead for Simrit and Vicky and reveals her hopes and expectations for their first term as new teachers. Sue Cowley takes a look at Victoria at work in her Year 3 classroom, discusses with both NQTs some strategies for the classroom, and she involves the NQTs in some voice coaching.

This programme follows the progress of Simrit Riat and Vicky Rutherford as they begin their teaching careers at Oldknow Junior School in Birmingham. Oldknow is a large inner-city school with a five-form intake. Most of the pupils come from a Pakistani or Bangladeshi background and speak English as an additional language. Headteacher Bhupinder Kondal gives an insight into how NQTs are supported at Oldknow and what they might expect in their first term. Learning mentor Mark Walters describes how he assesses the progress of NQTs and assistant headteacher Rebecca English talks about planning across year groups. Sue Cowley joins Simrit in her Year 3 classroom for some classroom coaching. Sue helps with some practical hints and tips and concentrates particularly on differentiation, exploring what it means and how it can be applied. The programme also shows how Vicky and Simrit approach their first parents evening, meeting some of the parents for the first time.
