All pupils have behaviour targets and at the end of every lesson their behaviour is graded on a scale of A to F with clear consequences for good and bad behaviour. Whatever their previous behaviour, pupils are always given a new start. The school develops pupils social skills with a programme of outdoor pursuits and other activities. Communication within the school and with parents is seen as critical, with parents and carers receiving a copy of their child's behaviour sheet every week. According to Ofsted Cuckmere House special school significantly enhances the life chances of its students . This programme explores how the school helps EBD students prepare for an independent and successful future and talks to students about life beyond school. Cuckmere House provides a safe and secure environment for students with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties. But after school, life will be very different for students like Steven and Kyle in year 11 which the programme focuses on and who hope to join the army after their GCSEs. The school has high academic expectations but it also offers a varied vocational curriculum. In Year 11 students get the chance to work outside the school environment which is vital for developing adult social skills. Of the 8 students that left last year, 5 passed their GCSEs and went to college and one is already in full-time work. |
