520 |a This is a remarkable document of the final hours of Salvador Allende, the first Marxist democratically elected leader of Chile. It reconstructs the day the country fell under the military government of General Pinochet. We hear blow-by-blow accounts from Allende's loyal surviving entourage, including his bodyguard, his secretary, and his wife and daughter. In this remarkable recounting, we learn that Allende completely trusted Pinochet and did not, at first, realize he was behind the army rebellion. In moving testimony, the survivors tell of their reluctance to leave Allende, but did so finally at his insistence. Archival footage shows the destruction of the Moneda Palace and the subsequent chaos. Allende's final address to his countrymen, exhorting them to dedicate themselves to freedom, provides one of the most stirring moments of twentienth century Latin American history.
