Summary:This volume contains contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Smart Structures and Structronic Systems, held in Magdeburg, Germany, 26-29 September 2000. Synergistic integration of smart materials, structures, sensors, actuators and control electronics has redefined the concept of structures from a conventional passive elastic system to an active controllable structronic (structure + electronic) system with inherent self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities. The Symposium was focused on the fundamental mechanics and electromechanics of structures and structronic systems, including smart materials, sensors, actuators, and control electronics. This book represents the symposium highlights, and consists of 43 papers presented by distinguished scientists from 15 countries. The editors sincerely hope that the book will serve as a milestone in this new emerging field and further promote the technology in both scientific research and practical applications of structronic systems. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of structronic systems this book will be of interest to researchers and engineers from theoretical and applied mechanics and many other disciplines, such as structures, materials, control, electronics, electromechanics, manufacturing, computers, and mathematics.
