The properties of the nucleon and its excited states in large-N quantum chromodynamics are discussed qualitatively. Then the pion-nucleon S-matrix is reduced. It is found that the model succeeds at the first level of calculation in producing many of the features of pion-nucleon scattering which are revealed by experiment, but that many aspects of the description need to be better understood, including the treatment of nonleading corrections near threshold and the inclusion of inelastic channels. 22 refs., 8 figs.
