| 520 | |a The article focuses on where and how to prompt the political process to respond to the demands of the millions of citizens engaged or wishing to participate in lifelong learning. As in other kinds of issues, there are four major ways to influence policy: legislative, administrative, judicial, or electoral. Students and instructors in the wide range of institutions and settings of the learning society can organize themselves into groups called Learning Societies to promote the advancement of lifelong learning. Not only could Learning Societies organize themselves around political issues but they can also serve as umbrella organizations for a variety of learning activities which may be desired though unavailable in the local community. A Learning Society can be attached to a free university, learning exchange, adult education center, or some other similar group. A more powerful alternative or supplement to the private Learning Society is the selection of a Community Learning Opportunities Council (CLOC) by the Mayor, City Manager, County Executive, or other executive officer or responsible body. The goal then is to establish as local, State, and Federal policy that every individual has the right to learn. (A lifelong learning platform presents 20 goals.) (Author/LH) | ||
