Description
Summary:The mid-intermediate elementary level curriculum guide on consumerism is designed to help students better define their own value system, develop an improved decision-making procedure, evaluate alternatives in the marketplace, and understand their consumer rights and responsibilities. The guide contains five sections related to five major objectives: to develop an understanding of the term "consumerism", to provide self-evaluation of consumer experiences, to understand the historical developments that led to the consumer movement, to understand consumer rights and responsibilities, and to recognize consumer abuse and learn the process of registering complaints. Large group strategies, small group strategies, and student activity sheets are included for each of the five subsections. Several teacher information sheets also are included. Some of the topics covered are: freshness codes, advertisements, recycling, checking container information, installment buying, consumer protection laws, guarantees, contracts, and the City of Syracuse Consumer Affairs Unit. A behavior inventory and simulation activities are provided. (EA)
