Summary:Presented is the syllabus of a training program to prepare therapists to work with stuttering children or adults. Intended for instructors, the information is presented in the form of five major chapters, each of which is divided into units. The unit usually consists of an introduction, suggested lecture topics (with source references), suggested discussion questions, recommended supplementary experiences such as use of films or tape recordings, and a bibliography. Four units deal with the nature and etiology of stuttering; five units with the historical background, types and results of research, theories and the basis for them; five units with diagnosis; 13 units with treatment; and four units with understandings and personal characteristics needed by the therapist. Following are examples of unit titles: "Experimental Studies of the Variability of Stuttering Behavior", Theories Which View Stuttering as a Problem of Learned Behavior", "Appraisal and Prognosis: Defining the Clinical Problem in the Child Stutterer", "Coping with Communicative Stress", and "Changes in the Therapy Relationship at Different Stages in Therapy".
