| Summary: | The present document comprises a preliminary version of the introductory section and the appendix of a forthcoming ESL textbook, "Developing Fluency in English," by R. Crymes, G. James, L. Smith, and H. Taylor. The book was test taught during 1969-70 in the English Language Institute of the University of Hawaii, and an analysis of the findings is now in progress. The text is designed to help high intermediate and advanced students of English as a second language improve their fluency in English through two avenues: (1) practice in listening and speaking in informal situations, where emphasis is on what is said, and (2) exercises incorporating systematic presentation of one aspect of English sentence embedding, which will help the students internalize some of the system of English syntax.
