Summary:This study is concerned both with the examination of current policies and practices relating to sixth year educational specialist programs and with clarifications of interrelationships to other degrees and programs. Chapter 1 discusses the factors contributing to the development of sixth year graduate programs. Chapter 2 presents the rationale and organization of the study. Chapter 3 reports the characteristics of the educational specialists programs, program planning principles and program comparisons. Chapter 4 compares the program patterns of 137 professional specializations and 12 intermediate degrees with the educational specialist program pattern. Chapter 5 presents brief summaries of educational specialist programs in different institutions to illustrate the variety of program offerings. Chapter 6 concludes with the current dimensions, program variables, strengths and inconsistencies, with some recommendations for educational specialist program evaluation and reform. The epilogue describes the reactions and recommendations of the researchers. Appendix 1 discusses some of the difficulties imposed by the sources used (graduate school catalogs and bulletins).
