The format follows an audio-lingual approach, including basic sentences and dialogs (with Spanish equivalents), pattern drills and exercises, extensive grammatical notes and examples, and related vocabulary lists. A section on phonology constitutes the first lesson; and Tzeltal-Spanish, Spanish-Tzeltal Lexicons are appended. Cultural notes explain Tzeltal kinship terms, forms of address, and other unusual usages. Several of the lessons are based on the situation of a doctor examining and treating a patient, while other lessons deal with the market, asking for directions, and the experiences of a small Tzeltal-speaking boy.
