Description
Summary:The importance of the prevention of failure in school is the main theme of this pamphlet. The different forces which influence the self-images of children, their school performance, acceptance or rejection by other children, and, most important, acceptance or rejection by the teacher herself, are discussed in a group of papers under eleven titles--(1) "what may we now believe," a plea for inner-directed teaching which stresses the importance of each individual child, (2) "reflections on childhood identity and the school," which asserts that the child's sense of identity is based on his positive or negative identity with his teacher, (3) "facilitating development in the preschool child--social and psychological perspectives," (4) "grouping as a factor in failure," (5) "evaluating children's growth," which urges evaluation of children's attitudinal changes as well as academic progress, (6) "the education of teachers," which includes the sub-topics of teacher placement, in-service education, and administrative planning, (7) "what harvest will we reap," which suggests that a positive climate and intellectual stimulation promote individual development, (8) "parents can help prevent school failure," (9) "implications for parent education," which stresses parent conferences and parent support for children's learning, (10) "the school within the community," and (11) "toward a program to prevent failure," a checklist of questions to be answered in evaluating any particular school. A bibliography is also included. This document is available for $1 from nea, 1201 sixteenth street, N.w., Washington, D.C. 20036. (ms)
