Description
Summary:The reasons students drop out of college were explored. The subjects were 250 full-time students who had withdrawn from college during one semester. Each subject completed a form listing a variety of reasons for withdrawal. The students were also asked to talk with a counselor at their convenience. Following the interview, the counselor completed a form giving an interpretation of the student's primary reason for withdrawal. There were significantly more males than females leaving school. A disparity existed between reasons for withdrawal as stated by the students and as seen by the counselor. Need for employment was the most popular reason cited by students. Counselors believed the primary reasons to be motivation or poor performance. It appears that care needs to be taken in the classification of reasons for student withdrawals from college. This speech was presented at the American personnel and guidance association convention, Dallas, Texas, march, 1967. (sk)
