| Summary: | An investigation was made of the personality characteristics of college dropouts. Personality inventories and responses to questionnaires were used to distinguish personality characteristics unIQue or especially prevalent among dropouts. The personality scale data and most of the questionnaire data used in the study were made available from another study. The population in both studies was the body of students who entered the University of California, Berkeley, as freshmen in the fall of 1961. Over a 4-year period, the total sample of dropouts was accumulated. Specific periods in which the students dropped out constituted a number of subdivisions of the population. The attitude and opinion survey was made up of six scales from the omnibus personality inventory (opi), the ethnocentrism and authoritarianism scales, and two other inventories. For purposes of item analysis, items from all of the six opi scales were used. Major conclusions were--(1) the college dropout phenomenon was not so alarming as it is frequently thought to be, (2) students who left the university pursued diverse paths (the majority went to other institutions and could not be lumped together as "dropouts"), and (3) revision of college programs to meet the varied needs of potential dropouts will likely reduce frequency.
