520 |a The impact on the economy of 10 cultural institutions in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area was determined by measuring their 1978 direct and indirect fianancial effects. The institutions are the Children's Theatre Company, Chimera Theatre, Cricket Theatre, Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota Dance Theatre, Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Walker Art Center, and Science Museum of Minnesota. Data gathered from the 10 institutions include operating and financial characteristics and total expenditures with local firms. Staff and audience surveys, tax rates and bases for all local jurisdictions, local government expenditures, and the number of local housing units were also obtained. Direct expenditures amounted to $28,600,000. Twenty-six percent of the total went toward local expenditures for goods and services, 38 percent for salaries and wages, 26 percent filtered into the community through local audience spending, and 10 percent through non-local audience spending. Guest artists spent $104,223 locally. Secondary business volume generated by institution-related effects totaled $57 million. Revenues to local government from the 10 institutions came to $2,135,000 while costs to local government amounted $1,146,000. (KC)
