Description
Summary:Intended for use with hearing impaired students, ages 9 to 13 years, the curriculum guide is an adaptation of an existing commercially available school science program with the addition of new materials. Adaptation included reorganization of some materials; paraphrasing to aid the student with textual material; isolation of key words and phrases; the use of language cards to build scientific vocabulary; and addition of activities for students at a wide range of reading, experience, and attention levels. Introductory information covers program characteristics and goals, instructional methodology, program components and instruction on use, the program development process, a suggested teacher training workshop, and adapted and unadapted versions of a lesson plan. The bulk of the document consists of the curriculum guide organized by levels, and within levels by units of study. Provided for each unit is a unit cluster outline; list of suggested materials; readings; and information on purpose, prerequisities, advance preparation, and teaching suggestions. The curriculum covers the following units: variation, space and motion, interaction and energy, population interactions (Level 3); environments, exploring matter, patterns, exploring energy (Level 4); adaptations, forces, motion, matter and energy (Level 5); population needs, models, models of matter, energy and ecosystems (Level 6); and biology (Level 7).
