Summary:This report discusses several activities of the Industrial Education Information System project to establish a data base to determine number and types of industrial education programs and background on teachers. Chapter 1 contains a general description of activities. Chapter 2 is a review of literature relating to causes and results of position changes by industrial educators. Project methods and procedures are described in chapter 3. Chapter 4 reports results of a pilot study to identify all programs and personnel in two representative regions of Illinois and a study of teacher turnover in these regions. Chapter 5 presents results of a national telephone survey to state supervisors to study vocational-industrial teacher supply. A summary of the report and major conclusions are provided in chapter 6. These recommendations are made: (1) prepare graduates of teacher education programs to handle student problems effectively, (2) establish a mechanism to identify first- and second-year teachers statewide and provide for their continuing inservice education, (3) recruit for teacher education programs, (4) increase resources to programs, (5) increase income and benefits for teachers, (6) establish a statewide clearinghouse for vacancies and potential teachers, and (7) continue to develop the data base and to study factors related to teacher supply and demand.
