Description
Summary:Data collected in Fall 1980 were analyzed to determine the academic background, tenure, sex, age, and average salaries of the full-time professional staff employed by six Hawaii community colleges. Five personnel categories were investigated: (1) institutional support, including professional staff in the provost's office, business affairs division, and operation and maintenance; (2) academic support, including the dean of instruction, the director of public service and instruction, and library and educational media staff; (3) student services, including the dean of students and personnel involved in counseling, student activities, student health, student support, and admissions and records; (4) public service, including those involved in apprenticeship and community service programs; and (5) instruction, including department chairpersons and faculty. Selected findings reveal that the instructional category had the highest percentage of staff (73%), followed by student services (13%), academic support (8%), institutional support (3%), and public service (3%). Of the 470 full-time instructors, 37% were female, 54% taught general education courses, and 66% were tenured. The average instructor's salary of $21,850 was higher than the national average of $20,060 for instructors at comparable institutions. The study report presents findings by campus for each personnel category and provides data for 1978 through 1980. (JP)
