Summary: | This monograph is intended to provide technical assistance for the implementation of the transition requirements of Public Law 105-17, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1997. Following an introduction, individual sections present: (1) a description of the importance and intent of transition requirements for youth as they prepare to enter the adult world; (2) a recommended process for developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that include the transition requirements; (3) a checklist of the transition requirements; (4) commonly asked questions and answers (concerning IEP content, transition participants, parent participation, agency responsibilities, and graduation); and (6) a summary of monitoring findings and studies related to implementation of the transition requirements. Appendices include a sample IEP and samples of student, parent and agency invitations, follow-up letters, and transfer of rights documents.
