| 520 | |a This report displays longitudinal data on minority enrollment at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC), and examines trends that may affect minority enrollment in the future. A record number of minority students attended PVCC for the fall semester 1999. Slightly over two-thirds of all minority students attending PVCC were African-American. The percentage of minority students attending PVCC has always been lower than the percentage of minority citizens residing within the college service region. In fall 1999, however, the gap between the two had nearly been bridged. For the most part, minority enrollment trends do not reflect overall enrollment trends. From fall 1995 to fall 1998, overall student enrollment declined, while minority enrollment rose; in fall 1998, the reverse occurred. In fall 1999, both overall and minority enrollment increased. Proportionally fewer African-American male students enroll at PVCC each fall than do White or other-race students. In terms of age, minority enrollment is similar to White student enrollment, though in fall 1999, for the first time, the percentage of traditional aged African-American students (18-21) exceeded the percentages of White students and other-race students. The percentage of new minority students has declined during the past few years, while the percentage of returning students has risen. (VWC) | ||
