The participants were in a second and third grade bilingual class and a first-through third-grade learning disabled and behavior disordered class in an at-risk elementary school along with a heterogeneous fourth-grade class in a neighboring Midwest suburban community. An experience-based fine arts program was created for the targeted students. Based on the evaluation methods developed by the researchers, student self-assessments, and teacher observations, it was concluded that the participating students learned more terminology and principles in each of the arts areas, increased their levels of appropriate behaviors when engaged in fine arts activities, and developed a greater appreciation of the arts. Cooperative learning skills also were practiced with a rise of student self-confidence and self-esteem levels noted during the intervention period. (EH)
