STS adoption has made only minimal impact on mainline social studies curriculum, although the topic has been included in discussion for decades. The paper outlines five possible barriers to more rapid adoption of STS content in the social studies and offers suggestions to surmount those barriers. Identified barriers include: (1) the crowded curriculum; (2) curriculum resources; (3) STS and controversy; (4) discomfort with science; and (5) low status for high technology. (EH)
