The checklist is not a lesson plan. Substantive material and information available to the trainer (and listed here) are to be added to provide the knowledge needed. The format of the checklist begins before the officer enters on duty in a section called Prior to Employment. Further training guides list activities and information covered in the Orientation Training Phase, On-The-Job Training Phase (First to Sixth Month), and Professionalism (Six Months to Retirement). After listing major areas of concern to consider during the first week, the checklist follows a task analysis of the duties of a probation officer as outlined in Chapter 8 of the "United States Probation System Administrative Manual." In some instances additional or background information is provided to supplement a task. Some training resources are listed at the end. The authors recommend that as each item in the checklist is accomplished by a trainee, the date be placed beside that item and that the checklist later be filed as a permanent record of training.
