Description
Summary:This monograph provides an overview of the National Career Development Guidelines developed by the National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee and presents competency-based career development strategies related to the National Guidelines. The strategies were identified through an analysis of career development abstracts included in the ERIC database between 1980 and 1990. The abstracts were reviewed as they relate to the National Guidelines areas and competencies for seven levels: elementary school, middle/junior high school, high school, and the adult settings of two-year community college, four-year college and university, business/industry, and community agency. A total of 631 abstracts were coded for level/setting, facilitator (teacher, school counselor, community agency staff, business/industry staff, parents), delivery mode (large group, small group, individual assistance, computer/media-based instruction, other), and 1 or more of the 12 competencies in the 3 National Guidelines areas (self-knowledge, educational/occupational exploration, career planning). Frequency distributions of reviewed abstracts, comments, recommendations, and sample career development activities or resources are provided at each level. General recommendations for increased emphasis on specific competencies and areas at different levels are made. The document includes 34 references and matrices listing the abstracts reviewed by ERIC number, indicating the guidelines areas, competencies, facilitators, and delivery modes covered by the ERIC documents.
