An observed score based on a random sample of items from the domain, and an estimated cutoff score derived from a judgmental standard setting procedure are assumed. The work of Brennan and Lockwood (1980) is extended by explicitly considering the covariance between errors of measurement and errors in standard setting. In combining the two kinds of errors, it is found that the item effect included in the error of measurement is correlated with the item affect that appears in the standard setting error. Therefore, in addition to the variance components for the different sources of error, the total error variance includes the covariance between the two item effects. The implications of these results for the probability of misclassification are also discussed. (PN)
