Description
Summary:A comparative study was made between education majors at the University of Georgia (UGA) and at Georgia Southern College (GSC) in an effort to evaluate the teacher education programs of the two schools and to assess the effectiveness of competency based teacher education. A questionnaire submitted to entering education students in both schools provided information on each student in the areas of personal background, beliefs, values, aspirations, and self concept. Exiting students responded to a similar questionnaire and were also asked to evaluate their college experience. Comparative tables are displayed showing the differences in responses from students of the two schools. To evaluate the effectiveness of competency based education, the Teacher Performance Assessment Instrument (TPAI) was used. Teacher competency scores on the TPAI were correlated with high pupil achievement scores. It was found that specific predictions about success in teacher education, using the entering and exiting attitude and background questionnaires, can be enhanced by also using the TPAI. It is suggested that this instrument is useful in screening students for teacher education. Samples are included of followup surveys to graduates of both GSC and UGA. (JD)
