The evaluation resulted in clear recognition of the information transfer role of these health professionals, and awareness that their information use patterns are not the same as those usually found among research scientists. The strong features of the existing manual systems were incorporated into the new automated systems, while redundant efforts and search times were reduced. The computer systems employed were not developed specifically for this project, but were particular applications of a multifacted information handling system previously developed by Exxon.
