520 |a The paper describes pilot work in seven classes with mainstreamed physically handicapped students and four special classes on two measures (Classroom Index of Student Needs and Classroom Index of Individualized Instruction) to describe degrees of student diversity in the classroom and of the individualized educational service provided there. The Classroom Index of Student Needs was formed by combining scores on selected teacher questionnaire items and the sum score on the Permanent Product Information form (an analysis of eight factors, including math and reading achievement test scores, absences, retentions, support services, and outside agencies involved). The Classroom Index of Individualized Instruction was formed by combining teacher questionnaire scores, ratings on the teacher movement observation measure, and ratings on the teacher contact observation measures. Among results were significantly more individualization of instruction and greater student needs in special classes than regular classes. Findings suggested the possibility of using the indexes to measure (1) the number and severity of student needs without identifying individual children as exceptional; and (2) the degree to which the classroom teacher individualizes instruction.
