520 |a This report reviews the results of the Australian Surveys of Primary School Achievement given every five years from 1955 to 1970. It compares results of the tests and explains why the survey was discontinued in 1975. Subjects were approximately 1,000 fifth-grade and 1,000 seventh-grade students selected as a representative sample of Australian school children. Comparison of the tests reveals 1960 to be the peak performance year, with the 1970 test results being somewhat higher than 1965 results in some areas. Overall scores for all years are higher for girls, for classes of 40 or more students, for metropolitan rather than country schools, and for single-grade rather than multigrade classes. Research problems that qualify results include curriculum changes over the years, different aims of different tests, and the fact that tests were not administered at the same time during the school year. In 1975 the surveys were discontinued and replaced by another test because the test battery was outmoded, the test failed to discriminate among the majority of students, survey aims were too ambitious, and because researchers favored a criterion-referenced approach over the norm-referenced approach used in the surveys.
