520 | |a This booklet describes the development and implementation of a curriculum designed to educate junior high school students in the care of infants and young children. The basic premise of Facilitative Environments Encouraging Development (FEED) is that the adoption of facilitative child-rearing techniques will reduce the handicapping conditions found among children of teenagers. With the increase in child-bearing among teenage and pre-teenage mothers, there has been an increase of high risk children, e.g., underweight, premature infants, who need proper care in order to overcome their handicaps. The FEED curriculum involves classroom and field study, including experience with both developmentally normal and handicapped preschool children, and familiarization with hospitals and child health care techniques. FEED students, tested through evaluative instruments described in the text, have shown more positive attitudes toward all children, and a greater knowledge of child development, than students not participating in the program. Additionally, they hold more positive attitudes toward hospitals. Finally, these students have demonstrated enhanced self-perception as a result of their training which focused on individual attitudes and capabilities. Technical details (such as expenses, staffing, and transportation), as well as program-planning and later evaluation are also presented. (Author/GC) | ||
