| Summary: | To determine the variety of physician's assistant programs already established and ascertain what specific tasks physicians are willing to delegate to assistants, the UCLA Allied Health Professions Project staff corresponded with schools having physicans's assistant programs, interviewed local physicians, and surveyed selected physicians regarding their views of the functions that could be performed by a physician's assistant. Results of the study procedures revealed that: (1) There is a need for standardization of physician's assistant programs; (2) Many physicians are ambivalent about hiring the physician's assistant because of legal complications and other problems; (3) Assembly Bill 2109, passed in 1970 by the California State Senate, should make it easier for the physician's assistant to work in California; (4) Candidates for physician's assistant programs will, for the most part, be recruited from the pool of former military corpsmen; and (5) Further research is needed to determine the specific tasks doctors would delegate to a qualified assistant.
