All public school systems of the great cities employ similar criteria in making textbook selections. Present practices of the great cities are discussed in relation to the Pittsburgh resoultion, a policy of positiveness (eg. What should be included in a textbook rather than what should not be). The role textbook publishers have played in determining the characteristics of textbooks available for use in urban schools is of major concern. Specifications of textbooks (eg. Their size, weight, thickness) and problems concerning the specifications are described. A guide for the selection of textbooks, ways of defending textbooks should they be attacked, and an explanation of the Pittsburgh resolution are presented. The 13 recommendations made involve increased organizing attempts by the great cities aimed at improving the quality of textbooks. | ||
