Violence is also part of the daily reality for many children in today's society, both at home and in school. The school system can be a key intervention point in providing students with the information necessary to understand and prevent violence. Many children do not have the knowledge or skills to prevent or react against violence in their lives, nor do they have the skills to act in nonviolent ways. Schools can, and should, set standards for healthy, violence-free relationships. This booklet illustrates the links between gender-based violence and gender stereotypes; describes how schools can promote and support healthy, violence-free relationships; and provides guidelines for policies and procedures that discourage gender-role stereotyping. Articles include: "Definition of Violence"; "Gender-Role Stereotypes and Gender-Based Violence"; "Gender-Based Violence in Schools"; and, "Creating a Nonviolent School Climate." Additional information is provided in a "Reading and Resources" section. (JBJ)
