This report examines the effectiveness of DARE in drug use prevention and how this program compares to other prevention programs. The report is organized into four sections and four appendices. Section 1 provides an overview of school-based drug prevention programs. Section 2 presents the methodologies used and results of each of the four components of the implementation assessment. It includes information on the national/regional-level operations of DARE, the State-level operations, and the implementation of DARE and other drug prevention programs at the local level. The report's methodology appears in Section 3, along with the results of the outcome assessment, while in Section 4, findings are discussed from both the implementation and outcome assessments. The findings show that the program has been extremely successful at placing drug education in the Nation's schools. Appendices contain sampling information for the school district drug prevention coordinators' survey, descriptions of each study utilized in the meta-analysis conducted for the outcome assessment, a bibliography of comparison program evaluations, and data collection materials for the implementation assessment.
