| Summary: | This seventh grade curriculum unit in Ukrainian as a second language, the first in a series, is designed as an introduction to Ukrainian in Alberta (Canada) secondary schools. An introductory section offers ideas and suggestions for classroom teaching technique, cultural instruction, and teaching method or medium. These recommendations are not prescriptive, but are rather suggestions which could and aid in creating a particular atmosphere" which would be a feature of the Ukrainian class/lesson. While the emphasis is on listening and speaking skills, some reading and writing is incorporated into the exercises. It also outlines the unit's objectives and linguistic content and contains brief notes on the Ukrainian educational system at the nursery, kindergarten, grade and high school levels. Each of six lessons contains lists of objectives and new vocabulary, a brief reading passage in Ukrainian, teacher notes, cultural notes, and exercises for reinforcing content learning. The lessons are followed by a section giving suggestions for further class activities and notes on evaluation. Additional sample exercises and an answer key are appended. (MSE) |
