Summary: | This report presents the latest available racial and ethnic data concerning high school completion rates, college participation rates, college enrollments, and degree completions. It also presents projections on the numbers of high school graduates, from a study conducted by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and the College Board, as well as analyses of the number of new doctorates who entered academia during the 1980s and the proportions of new faculty hires from different racial and ethnic groups. Among other findings the data reveal that: (1) in 1990, the Hispanic high school completion rate was 54.9 percent, 20 points below the rate for African Americans and nearly 30 points behind the rate for Whites; (2) about 22 states are expected to have declines in African American high school graduates by 1995; (3) between 1988 and 1990, minority enrollment in postsecondary education increased 10 percent, compared with a 5.1 percent increase in total enrollment; (4) African Americans and Hispanics earned fewer undergraduate engineering degrees in 1989 than in 1987, and African American men received fewer degrees in education, health, and life science at the bachelor's level; and (5) minorities increased their share of full-time positions in higher education from 17.7 percent in 1979 to 20.3 percent in 1989.
