| 520 | |a A career/vocational assessment program with four participating high schools was developed. The major goal was to provide students the opportunity to identify and explore their specific vocational interests and opportunities. The target population consisted of 222 ninth-graders who were prevocational students or who had expressed an interest in vocational education. Students were administered the Harrington O'Shea Interest Inventory. Scores were correlated using the Guidance Information System (GIS). Each student received a listing of occupations related to their identified interests and researched career groups using GIS, the Virginia VIEW, and other career materials. Results of the assessment and career exploration activities were used as an advisory tool in decision making for course selection and vocational planning. During individual counseling sessions with each student, the project and project results were discussed. Inservice workshops were provided for teachers, counselors, and administrators.
