Barcoding of Collections in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 124 [microform] / Gail A. Kennedy and Michael J. Lach, Jr.

520 |a The process of identifying items in a library's collection by assigning to each a unique machine readable code has been generally referred to as barcoding. Barcoding is often one of the first critical projects a library will embark upon in the process of automation. This Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit addresses many of the major issues and problems in barcoding by reviewing the experiences of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries that have undertaken barcoding projects. The kit is based on a comprehensive survey of 88 ARL members conducted in early 1986. Libraries selected to participate were those that indicated in the Office of Management Studies Automation Inventory that they were either modifying or planning automated circulation systems, or that their systems were operational. Extensive survey results are provided in the kit as are 12 documents dealing with preliminary considerations for barcoding, 19 documents describing barcoding projects, 1 example of ongoing procedures, 8 barcoding project summaries, and a list of selected references.
