Summary: | The history of the Chapman College Residence Education Center (REC) System is traced from 1958 to 1982. After experimenting near its home campus in Orange, California, the program has grown to 41 centers in California and eight other states, including the Navy's shipboard PACE program. In 1958 the college met the request of students at nearby El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and began holding evening classes. In 1965 four military bases requested the college to set up programs at their sites. By the end of the 1981-1982 fiscal year, center course enrollments reached over 28,000, the student body numbered over 4,000, and PACE was producing over 10,000 enrollments a year. The program also serves individuals who are not in the military. Each center handles its own functions, such as revenue, course registrations, admission, and financial aid applications. A manual on REC operations has also been developed. About half of REC center directors have also had military experience, 84% hold graduate degrees, and half are approved to teach center courses. Information is included on REC curriculum and students, academic quality control, enrollment patterns, other off-campus competition, and REC and the home campus. A 10-page bibliography and 14 appendices providing statistical tables and supplementary additional data on the program are included. (SW) |
