Summary: | Designed for use by school and community groups, this kit is divided into three parts. The "Source Book," the core of the program, provides background information on Gandhi, details on the links between Mahatma Gandhi and UNICEF, and a comprehensive bibliography to facilitate further research. Separate one-page readings relate Gandhi's views on health, sanitation, nutrition, women, education, technology, and community to UNICEF case studies. Additional short readings focus on Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence, women's rights, and UNICEF activities in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. An activity guide and accompanying activity sheets complement the sourcebook and offer specific suggestions for organizing and executing group activities. Examples of activities are role plays, hunger awareness exercises, family activities, riddles and puzzles, an international festival, and a feast or famine banquet. Additional information sheets include tips on organizing workshops, recipes for foods of India, an eight-page reading which places Gandhi's life in the context of world events, and a program questionnaire.
