Subjects were 6,222 students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 who were enrolled in 124 public schools in 83 Wisconsin communities. The results of the study revealed that 53% of sixth graders had used alcohol, 51% of 12th graders used alcohol in the 2 weeks prior to the survey, and 37% of seniors and 28% of sophomores drank to the point of intoxication at least once in the 2 weeks prior to the survey. In the year prior to the survey, 46% of 12th graders had driven after drinking and 70% had ridden in a vehicle driven by someone who had been drinking alcohol. Alcohol use rates for girls were only slightly lower than for boys. Although they were under the legal age, 18% of 12th graders reported buying alcohol at a store and 18% reported getting alcohol in a bar. Illicit drugs were reportedly tried by 47% of seniors, 34% of sophomores, 18% of eighth graders, and 6% of sixth graders. Problem drinking or drug use was found in 9% of 6th graders, 19% of 8th graders, 33% of 10th graders, and 44% of 12th graders. These findings document the magnitude of the challenge faced by educators in meeting the alcohol and other drug use problem. (NB)
